City & Guilds Medication Training

Providing your staff with the fully accredited training

COURSE CONTENT

The course provides learners with the under-pinning knowledge in handling medication that is a requirement of the CQC (Care Quality Commission) and is based on the Skills for Care medication knowledge set.

The course consists of two elements; up to 5 hours of pre-course study and a one-day training course. The pre-course study is included in the “Student Information Pack” which is sent to the student prior to the training day. The pre-course study is to encourage the student to find out about their organisation’s policies and procedures, the National Minimum Standards, the law and legislation relating to handling medicines and different medicines administration techniques.

The training day covers four units:

Unit 1: Current legislation and guidance for handling medicines.
Unit 2: Roles, responsibilities and boundaries of the care worker and other professionals involved with medicines.
Unit 3: Types of medicines and routes of administration.
Unit 4: Safe practices in the administration of medication for care workers.

Throughout each unit students are given handouts such as “Best practices in handling medication” and “Example of a medicine administration procedure”.

Upon completion of each unit the student will demonstrate their knowledge and learning through multiple choice and short answer assessment papers. There is a pass mark and if this is not reached the student will fail the course. Successful students will have their certificates posted to them once their assessment papers have been marked – usually within ten days.

The trainers are all healthcare professionals such as pharmacists, registered pharmacy technicians and registered nurses.
